Surgical Abortion (Suction evacuation)
- For pregnancies less than 14 weeks . The procedure SHOULD NOT be routinely completed by sharp curettage
- It can be performed manually or with an electric vacuum aspirator.
- Routine use of antibiotics at the time of surgical abortion is best practice as it reduces the risk of infection after the abortion.
- Recommendations for perisurgical abortion antibiotic prophylaxis are:
- 200 mg doxycycline within 2 hours before the procedure OR
- 500 mg azithromycin within 2 hours before the procedure.
