Definitions of Terms

Unwanted Pregnancy

  • a pregnancy that was not planned for or not desired by the couple or the mother at the time of conception.
  • Sometimes this may be due to an abnormality of the fetus or of an illness in the mother.

Abortion

  • the spontaneous expulsion or removal of an embryo or fetus from the uterus at a stage of pregnancy when it is incapable of independent survival (less than 500gms or less than 22 weeks gestation).

Termination of pregnancy

  • for the purpose of this module,it is confined to procedures to remove an embryo or fetus where the pregnancy is less than 22 weeks of gestation.
  • If the gestation is unknown, it is where the fetus is estimated to be less than 500 gms.

Unsafe abortion

  • a procedure for terminating an unwanted pregnancy either by persons lacking the necessary skills, or
  • in an environment lacking the minimal medical standards, or both.
