Post TOP Care, Including Contraceptive Counselling

TOPs should not be seen as a form of contraception.

After a TOP procedure, all patients should be given:

  • Adequate information on post-abortion care & regarding complications
  • Contraceptive information & supplies.
  • Providers can also discuss and provide emergency contraception, as well as discuss prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV.
  • Follow-up visit, if the woman needs or desires.
  • Patients should also be appropriately referred for underlying medical conditions.

Conscientious Objectors

  • When doctors are unable to provide specific reproductive services due personal beliefs or moral stance, they should have a referral processes in place to provide for transfer of care in a timely manner.
  • Doctors should give advance notice of their personal moral commitments and should not advocate or argue their position to patients/clients.
  • Facility constraints or personnel constraints should not lead to the denial of safe abortion services.
