Starting Contraceptive Methods
- Contraceptive methods can be started at any time of the cycle as long as its reasonable sure that the woman is Not pregnant, termed the Quick start method.
- The following are situations whereby its reasonably sure that the woman is not pregnant.
How can a provider be reasonably sure that a women is NOT pregnant?
WHO – Selected Practice Recommendations For Contraceptive Use. Third Edition, 2016
IF she has NO signs or symptoms of pregnancy and meets any of the following criteria:
She Has NOT had intercourse since last normal menses
She Has been correctly or consistently using a reliable method of contraception
She Is within the 1st 7 days after normal menses
She s within 4 weeks post partum for NOT lacting women
She is within the 1st 7 days post abortion or miscarriage
She is fully or nearly full breastfeeding, amenorrhoeic & less than 6 mths post partum
