Ethical and legal issues in contraception

Ethical – is contraception and contragestation similar?

  • Contragestation could be considered as contraception that work after the embryo has been formed.
  • The ‘morning after pills’, IUD (the coil) and the recently, but not available in all countries, Mifepristone (RU486) may be grouped under this category.
  • Ethically, would disallowing implantation be considered as an abortion?
  • No as the above method are not equal to abortion as the women would need to ‘carry’ (i.e. be pregnant) before she can be considered as had a miscarriage.

Ethical – other methods

  • Similarly, the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority (HFEA) UK considers pregnancy as ‘after the embryo has become implanted’.
  • Since all contraceptive methods (except RU486) act in preventing implantation by making the endometrial lining ‘unwelcoming’.
  • It is therefore not considered as an abortifacient.
